Preserving Traditional Handicrafts: The Ethical Work of Okhai | Blog

"The hand of a craftsman engaged in his craft is always pure."

In this case, it is the inspiring work of the craftswomen and artisans engaged with Okhai that results in the creation of handicraft products that have nothing but pure and positive intentions! A special thanks to my friend @kometjuice, with whom I spent the past month working at the grassroots level of one of the most ethical NGO’s I know.

I have never before visited a place that felt so serene and exuded such positivity, radiating good vibes 24×7! A place where peacocks are as common as stray dogs, and cows greet you at every corner. Where cycling is second nature and the Milky Way seems just within reach.
Mithapur resembles an oasis in a desolate landscape, with TATA Chemical Plants forming its skyline.

So….. what is this NGO I’m speaking of and how has it captured my heart?

Working in a Nutshell | Edit #1 | Many Many Things for Like Minded People | Style Files

Commercial spaces are always at a premium and meetings in cafes/ bars dig steep – we are in the growing times of limited spaces and work expansions –  but is this some new phenomenon? Nope! We just gotta learn to live with all of this uncompromisingly and in vogue 😉

Space – 550 Sq feet – Working in a Nutshell | Edit #1

| manymanythings for Like Minded People | is our first ever collaboration – Yeah! – Interiors for a broadcasting and media production house who rightly calls itself Like Minded People and we would have not taken this project up or pulled it off if not for the director / founder / main mad like minded man Piyush Raghani. Thankyou! One thing that pinches me more than anything else is how people spring for and spend on clothes and accessories so easily but a furniture piece, textile or house accent suddenly doesn’t fit the bill! The later may in-fact cost lesser in many cases.

Look at it with a more pragmatic matter-of-fact way, people are willing to take risks on their bodies more than they are for their home.” she says

And true that! People surely do invest more on being in vogue than they do to decorate their homes. But doesn’t your home speak of you just as much?! Well well……we aren’t going to discuss people or philosophies here, we belong to that side of the world where one tassel hanging from the cushioned chair is a treat to the eye and for who the rivets and  nails too need to be plated to match the detail of the intended mood. And before you think otherwise, the world I am talking about is the one where your home and what you come back to everyday  needs to break the mundane and yet fit in as much.

Exploring the Art of Glass Design at Khozem Glass Processing Works

I never gave much thought to my father’s business until recently. Growing up immersed in it, I lacked an outsider’s perspective on how truly fascinating it is.

Today, let me introduce you to Khozem Glass Processing Works—affectionately named by my grandfather with the tagline, “The Glass People.” This name captures their expertise in the art of glass design.

I keep asking my workers, crafters, artists, this one question and often its just a greeting………. “Khush ho?” (Are you happy???) …….. the man/ woman smiles…….. surprised and shy most of the time, happy by the gesture itself sometimes and at other times back with a story in his/her life – the stories are the best! These guys have much to share and those smiles – content –  rather contagious and one of the reasons that I just love to chat up with them creators, the men/women who truly believe in their contributions to whatever big or little they do – they are happy and more than that – proud, something that I always have to remind myself off, strangely!

Ever thought about this – the people and businesses that a creative supports also supports them. It needs to co-exist like a demand and supply chart, its use needs to progress and develop not only in availability but in education and awareness as well and only then can an art form and its representative artistry stay alive. I feel elated that the digital world could never take away from this 2000 year old form of printing  – Screen Printing.
