In our recent visit to The Vintage Garden Exhibition we came across a couple of lovely Doctors! Sitting besides a cute little garden like set-up exhibiting all kinds of  terrariums, suspended kokedama and very rustic looking dream-catchers.
Meet:  Dr. Abhijit Varpe (Founder) and  Dr. Esha Varpe (Director) of Copper Brains: Which is a  brilliant green-hearted initiative towards educating and exploring the possibilities of combining nature with art.

Being the nature freak that I am, I couldn’t resist wanting to know more about who they were and what they do; CoppeR BrainS was established in an attempt to develop a niche where garden elements marry an art form that can be brought into our homes and add life and beauty in our living spaces.

What we LOVE about them is the passion that’s put in right from research to development and the sharing and caring involved!

They also organize a bunch of very interesting workshops! And maintain a blog where you can find all sorts of information about terrariums and their history and other unique  gardening techniques.

Roanna Fernandes- Writer. Illustrator

A writer and illustrator from Bombay and the girl behind jupiter skye. If I had to describe Roanna as a person in 3 words they would be C.U.T.E + F.R.I.E.N.D.L.Y + C.O.L.O.U.R.F.U.L  and this about her is perfectly depicted through most of her illustrations. Everytime I view her work it instantly reminds me of my precious childhood memories filled with an obsession for stickers!! Some of my favorite works by her are…

You can view her complete portfolio ‘here’ She has also recently launched the’ The Jupiter Skye Shop’ that showcases a variety of items made by her that are up for grabs! Ranging from beachie jewelry to greeting cards and ornaments to stickers!! (yaay!)

We asked Roanna:  what inspires her artistry? And what is especially inspiring her these days? And this is what she had to say ”Colours, objects, patterns…People! What they wear and/ or do…I note ideas down on my phone, make lists and work on things I am inspired by at the time. At the moment, I am besotted with the Grand Budapest Hotel. Its colours and typefaces, and costumes + sets.. the details are so fine.”

And For those of you who have not seen the film- it truly is a work of art and inspiring in so many ways; we absolutely agree with you on this one Roanna! 🙂

The Second Life_ Waste for change

The Second Life-03

To expect a third party to save the environment is passé, when everyone of us can help the cause by reusing things of daily requirements

Well…. we are glad someone is thinking and thinking right and thats why we absolutely love the ideology and products of “The Second Life”  by StudioABCD.

The Second Life is an honest attempt at making products and stationery, reusing and recycling the most basic items like the newspaper- that keeps piling up to be given to the scrap dealer after it’s everyday read; and film posters – that are printed way more than really required. The whole idea is to find and create an alternative & sustain it by adding value to it – – almost like giving it another lifeline!!!

“Every time we dispose a product and call it ‘waste’ we also dispose the energy spent on making it… it must be our conscious responsibility to step out of the system of ‘disposable culture’ and enter a cycle of living with absorbing systems.”

They block print on newspaper and film poster backs and have a range of stationery that includes wrapping papers, envelopes and notebooks. We totally encourage the idea!

P.S. Love the Up-cycled Film Poster Envelope!

Omkar Mahashabde_Caricatures

We met Omkar at the Screen Printing workshop at Space118 and glad that we did. His illustrations truly speak for him – Effortless! Its seldom that an artist is so smooth both on paper and digital medium – one needs to view more of his work on his blog ‘illustrations design and me’ to understand why we have summed it up in just a word. He is that guy who has revealed what is said never to be revealed….. his TooL KiT…. and thats why we like him so much – effortless and fearless!

P.S. My personal favorite is the caricature of Maximus. Also we have this “man with glasses and beard” cartoon personally signed by him… soon to adorn the walls of the MMT office! Yeahhh!!!!

Art of Screen Printing

Screen Printing Wkshop_Studio118

‘Woah! This is harder than it looks!’… I guess that is when you know something truly is an ART!

That was my first reaction after attending a workshop at Space118 last weekend. I am sure some of you would agree with me on this. It is the kind of art that requires a serious commitment to begin and then to get better and better at it.

Many small studios in Lower Parel and Andheri work their skills on screen designs and print thousands of products every day! We too are waiting for the MMT contact cards to come fresh out of press, which instigated this desire to know how screen printing is even done!!!

What is Screen printing?
It is a printing technique that uses a woven meshto support an ink-blocking stencil to receive a desired image.

It is arguably the most versatile of all printing processes and often identified with the pop-art works of Marliyn Monroe by artist Andy Warhol who popularised this technique. It was also known as serigraphy in the USA in 1962.

Did you know?
Apart from the regular paper, textiles, glass mediums – screen printing is used in many many different industries including: balloons, medical devices, electronics, vehicals, circuit boards, touch screens, product labels, sign and displays, snowboard graphics, thick film technology etc etc 😮

Screen printing is truly a skill every art&craft enthusiast should master!
Hopefully this encourages and inspires you to take up the challenge that is screen printing, also do let us know when you succeed and create some beautiful works of art!
